The Tokai VS-80 Versatile Sound is one of the more uncommon offshoots of Tokai’s early-’80s lineup. Produced in 1981 alongside the better-known ST-series “Springy Sound” models, the VS-80 takes the familiar Strat platform and adapts it into a dual-humbucker configuration with upgraded materials and appointments.
Construction features a bound flame maple top over a mahogany body, giving the guitar a noticeably richer and more mid-forward voice than traditional alder-bodied ST models. The Transparent Amber Burst finish highlights the figuring in the maple cap while keeping the aesthetic rooted firmly in early-’80s Japanese craftsmanship.
The maple neck carries Tokai’s soft V profile seen on higher-tier ST80 and ST100 models—substantial but comfortable, with excellent hand support along the shoulders. Combined with the traditional 25.5" scale and vintage-style tremolo system, the instrument retains the snap and attack associated with the Strat format while offering a thicker tonal foundation.
This example is fitted with a pair of Tokai PAF-style humbuckers. The result is a versatile voice that moves easily from articulate cleans to fuller overdriven tones, broadening the platform beyond traditional single-coil territory.
A rare and well-executed MIJ Strat-variant from Tokai’s golden era—distinctive both visually and tonally.
